How Skye’s LifeStraw Saved Scout (Again!)

If you’ve ever hiked through Yellowstone National Park, you know one thing for certain—you don’t just visit Yellowstone… you experience it.

That was exactly the plan for Scout, Skye, and their fearless hiking partner, Ranger.

The morning started perfectly. Cool mountain air, towering pine trees, steaming geysers in the distance, and bison grazing across wide-open meadows. Scout confidently led the expedition with his usual “professional wilderness expert” attitude.

“I’ve got this,” Scout announced proudly.

Skye smiled.

Ranger tilted his head.

Neither of them believed him.

After several miles of climbing rocky trails and stopping every few minutes because Scout insisted every squirrel was “probably planning something,” the group reached an incredible overlook above Yellowstone’s colorful valleys.

“This,” Scout declared dramatically, “is why people invented hiking.”

Then reality arrived.

Scout reached into his backpack.

Nothing.

He checked again.

Still nothing.

“Oh… that’s interesting.”

“What?” asked Skye.

“I may have forgotten our water bottles.”

“Our?” Skye laughed.

“Well… technically Ranger was responsible for reminding me.”

Ranger simply looked away as if he had never met Scout.

Within another mile the afternoon sun warmed the trail, and Scout began sounding like a camel that had wandered into the desert.

“I would trade three cheeseburgers for a glass of water.”

Five minutes later…

“I’d trade four.”

Soon they reached a crystal-clear mountain stream flowing over smooth rocks.

Scout knelt beside it.

“I’ve never loved water this much.”

Skye quickly stopped him.

“Not so fast, wilderness genius.”

She reached into her backpack and pulled out one small piece of gear that instantly changed the day.

By sunset, golden light painted the mountains while Scout reflected on the day’s lesson.

“Next time,” he said confidently, “I’ll remember the water bottles.”

Skye laughed.

“I’ll still pack the LifeStraw.”

“Good idea.”
