The Aspen Adventure – Scout, Skye & The Secret Gift
The Aspen Adventure – Scout, Skye & The Secret Gift.
Aspen, Colorado looked like something straight out of an adventure movie. Massive snow-capped mountains towered over endless forests of pine and aspen trees while cool mountain air carried the scent of cedar, fresh dirt, and campfire smoke drifting from nearby lodges. Crystal-clear streams rushed down rocky hillsides, and mountain bikers zipped through winding trails like caffeinated squirrels.
For Scout and Skye, it was paradise.
For Ranger, it was a giant outdoor buffet of mysterious smells.
The trio had traveled to Aspen for a week of mountain biking, hiking, and “relaxation,” which for Scout mostly meant eating pancakes the size of tractor tires and pretending he wasn’t out of breath every time the trail tilted uphill.
But something strange was happening.
Skye was acting suspicious.
Very suspicious.
“Why do you keep checking your backpack?” Scout asked as they loaded their mountain bikes near the trailhead.
“I’m not checking my backpack,” Skye replied quickly.
“You just checked it three times in thirty seconds.”
“That’s called organization.”
Scout narrowed his eyes. “You’re hiding something.”
Ranger barked dramatically, clearly adding to the tension.
The trail climbed high into the Rockies as the morning sun lit the mountains in golden light. Birds chirped overhead while cool breezes carried the smell of pine sap and damp earth through the forest. Scout pedaled hard while Skye stayed unusually cheerful.
Too cheerful.
Every few minutes, Scout noticed clues.
First, he heard a strange sloshing sound coming from Skye’s pack.
Then she kept asking oddly specific questions.
“Are you thirsty?”
“No.”
“What if you became thirsty?”
“I said no.”
“But what if… extreme thirst happened?”
Scout stared at her. “That sounds like a survival documentary.”
As they climbed higher into the mountains, Scout became increasingly convinced Skye was planning something. Possibly a surprise. Possibly an ambush. Possibly both.
At one scenic overlook, Aspen spread out below them in breathtaking beauty. Endless forests blanketed the mountains while rivers shimmered like silver ribbons in the valley below. The air smelled unbelievably fresh, like pine trees had teamed up with mint gum.
Scout took a deep breath. “This place is incredible.”
Skye grinned. “Yep. Also, random question… if you were a caveman, how would you carry water?”
Scout blinked. “That’s… oddly specific.”
“Answer the question.”
“Well, cavemen probably drank directly from streams.”
“Dirty streams,” Skye corrected.
“True. Then maybe animal hide water sacks?”
“Interesting…” Skye said mysteriously while scribbling something into a tiny notebook.
“You have a notebook now?!”
Ranger sniffed Skye’s backpack excitedly.
Scout pointed dramatically. “Even Ranger knows something’s going on!”
The mystery deepened during the afternoon ride. The rocky downhill trails twisted through towering forests while small waterfalls spilled beside the path. Scout dodged roots, rocks, and one squirrel that seemed personally offended by bicycles.
Meanwhile, Skye continued dropping suspicious clues.
“You know what’s important during mountain biking?”
“Balance?”
“Hydration.”
“You sound like a commercial.”
“What if someone gave you the perfect hydration solution?”
Scout slammed on his brakes. “AHA! THERE IS A GIFT!”
Skye burst out laughing. “You’re terrible at mystery solving.”
“I once watched three seasons of detective shows.”
“And yet you still thought a squirrel was following us.”
“That squirrel had motive.”
Later, dark storm clouds rolled across the mountains. Thunder echoed through the valleys while cool rain began falling over the trails. Ranger sprinted around like he had become the star of an action movie.
Scout wiped rain from his face. “Okay… now I’m actually thirsty.”
Skye smiled suspiciously again.
Very suspiciously.
She reached into her backpack but quickly stopped.
“Nope. Not yet.”
Scout groaned dramatically. “This is psychological warfare.”
As they raced downhill through Aspen’s muddy mountain trails, Scout became obsessed with solving the mystery. Was it snacks? A gadget? Survival gear? A burrito?
At dinner that night, while sitting beside a roaring fire at a rustic mountain lodge, Scout noticed one final clue.
Printed on the corner of Skye’s hidden gear bag were the letters:
“M.U.L.E.”
Scout gasped.
“A mule? You bought me livestock?”
Skye nearly spit out her drink laughing.
“No, genius.”
“Then what does it mean?!”
Skye leaned back with a mischievous grin. “You’ll find out tomorrow.”
Scout stared dramatically into the fire while thunder rolled outside the lodge.
The mystery of the Aspen Mountain Gift had only just begun.
